Who We Are

Preserving the Tradition of the Ancient Game of Golf

Purpose

The Carolina Hickory Golf Association (CHGA) is formed for the following purposes:

  • To preserve the traditions of the royal and ancient game of golf;
  • To promote wider interest in the playing of hickory golf;
  • To recreate, as closely as possible, the hickory era playing characteristics; and
  • To align the golfing experience with the intentions of the hickory era course designers.

Organization

  • CHGA is organized into an executive committee comprising these officers:
    • Captain; (Andy Moye)
    • Vice Captains: (Barry Markowitz, Lee Burton, Doug Gelbert, Russell Eaves)
  • CHGA will be headquartered in the Pinehurst, NC area, but anyone is eligible for membership, no matter where domiciled.
  • Membership in CHGA shall be by invitation or by application from any interested person, male or female. The $100.00 membership fee is a one-time fee. The membership fee is $25.00 for those below the age of 21.

Guidelines:

  • CHGA shall gather periodically, preferably once per month, to play hickory golf and to enjoy the fellowship of hickory golfers. Play shall be, as much as possible, on courses designed and built during the hickory era, i.e. prior to about 1935. Hickory shafted golf clubs shall be manufactured prior to 1935 and be appropriate to the period. We adhere to the equipment guidelines published by the Society of Hickory Golfers. Competitive matches and tournaments shall be encouraged.
  • CHGA shall not be formally affiliated with any commercial enterprise and prospective members seeking commercial gain shall be discouraged. The buying, selling, bartering and selling of hickory clubs between members will not be looked upon as a commercial activity.
